Bushara Island Camp | Uganda

Bushara Island is a 16-hectare private island situated on Lake Bunyonyi, a volcanic lake in southwest Uganda. This forested islands offers a wonderful place to relax in a glorious setting. The green hills, papyrus swamps and local village culture offer a variety of opportunities for guest to enjoy their stay.


The resort offers guests a variety of lodging options from pitching one’s own tent to fully furnished rooms to meet the needs of the individual, couples, groups, and families. All safari tents and cottages are self-contained and offer privacy and a beautiful view of the lake. Rates for safari tents and cottages range from US$16 to US $39 pp per night. If you pitch your own tent; the site fee is US$3 pp per night. (See website for complete list of rates.) Group events and conferences accommodations are available for up to 100 people.


Swimming, sailing, canoeing, and, for the more adventurous, windsurfing are a few activities people enjoy on Lake Bunyonyi. Bushara Island Camp offers many activities for visitors includ- ing nightly campfires, local dance performances, star-gazing, several bird watching tours, and walking trails. The camp offers a variety of cultural and natural tours for US$2-5 pp. An on-site restaurant serves delicious meals including a variety of traditional dishes.

Getting There

Lake Bunyonyi is located 8km from the town of Kabale in the south-western tip of Uganda. Special taxis are available from Kabale to the shore of Lake Bunyonyi. Transport from the shore of Lake Bunyonyi to Bushara Island can be arranged at Bushara’s lakeside hut. Staff can transport visitors by motorboat or a dugout canoe. Lake travel takes about 15 minutes in the motorboat and about 40 minutes in a dugout canoe.

Making a Difference

Bushara Island Camp is one arm of a locally managed nonprofit organization called the Lake Bunyonyi Development Company (LBDC). The island camp is a sustainable eco-tourism resort focusing on raising awareness and promoting protection of the natural environment. The camp evolved with assistance of the local Anglican diocese, and in response to the needs of the people of Lake Bunyonyi. Profits from the campground assist local communities around the lake through activities with orphan care, income generation projects, agro-forestry, small livestock distribution, scholarships, craft co-ops, swimming instruction, and HIV/AIDS education.
